A6 Londonderry to Dungiven Dualling Scheme

Speaking at the launch of the Ilex Regeneration Plan for Londonderry on 13 December 2005, the former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Peter Hain MP, announced a proposal to construct 30 a kilometre dual carriageway between Londonderry and Dungiven including a dual carriageway bypass of Dungiven. The decision to include this dual carriageway project into the Department for Regional Development’s Regional Strategic Transport Network Transport Plan 2015 resulted from a strategy developed by civil engineering consultants Scott Wilson for the possible future improvement of the A6 between Londonderry and Castledawson. Following examination of a number of potential corridors where a dual carriageway could be built, Roads Service accepted the consultants recommendation of a preferred corridor loosely based around the line of the existing road.

Planning Status at 15 January 2010: Under current proposals the Londonderry to Dungiven dual carriageway will terminate at a new roundabout on the A2 Clooney Road, requiring major changes to the existing Caw Roundabout to Maydown dual carriageway.
