Description of Scheme

The Regional Strategic Transport Network Transport Plan (RSTN TP) 2015 includes for the improvement of the A2 Buncrana Road, Derry between the Pennyburn Roundabout and the Border.

Buncrana Road is part of the North Western Key Transport Corridor connecting Belfast to Londonderry and on to Donegal.

The Buncrana Road carries around 17,000 vehicles per day 2-way on the urban section with peak traffic approaching 1400 vehicles per hour in the pm. The busiest section of the road – Pennyburn Roundabout to Springtown Road suffers from traffic congestion and delays occurring at peak periods on every weekday. The rural section of the road carries around 14,000 vehicles per day 2-way.

The proposal would improve traffic flows on Buncrana Road by widening the 4.5 kilometres of single lane carriageway to achieve 2 traffic lanes in each direction between Pennyburn Roundabout and the border. The carriageway widening may mostly be on line but consideration is to be given to partial off-line at the eastern end of the corridor between Pennyburn Pass and Racecourse Road or Springtown Road. Part of the rural section between Skeoge Roundabout and the border may be dual carriageway.

Preferred Route Announced

Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy has announced the preferred route for the proposed improvements to Buncrana Road in Londonderry. Speaking on Tuesday 10 February 2009, the Minister said “I am pleased to report that Roads Service has completed the important route assessment stage of the proposed improvements to Buncrana Road in Derry. I can confirm that the result of extensive consideration is that the improvements will be carried out on-line along the entire route between Pennyburn Roundabout and the border”.

The preferred route (294kb)This link will open a new window.opens in a pdf file is in two parts:

  • The red route widens the existing road between Pennyburn Roundabout and Skeoge Roundabout to 4 lanes, providing 2 lanes of traffic in each direction.
  • The navy route widens the existing road between Skeoge Roundabout and the Border with the Republic of Ireland to dual carriageway standard.

The preferred route is the culmination of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 assessments as presented at the public consultation events held in April 2007 and April 2008 respectively and has been assessed against the five Government objectives for transport: Environment, Safety, Economy, Accessibility and Integration.

The A2 Buncrana Road improvement scheme is contained in the Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland and is one of a number of schemes included in the programme of Strategic Road Improvements that are proposed over the next 10 years to 2017/18. Work is not expected to commence until the latter part of the Plan period.
