Training and Development

Training Opportunities

As an Investors in People organisation, Roads Service is committed to ensuring that all our people have the opportunity to realise their full potential by becoming appropriately qualified, trained, skilled and motivated.

Training and Development opportunities are available in many forms within Roads Service:

Development by Managerial Action

  • Managers assist staff to identify suitable training to become effective in their job, and encourage and support them through a wide range of training activities.
  • Training activities can include on-the-job training, reading a book or a manual, on-line learning, information seminars, conferences, videos etc - in addition to formal training courses.
  • Some recognised qualifications may be gained through training activities.
  • Other developmental opportunities which Managers can facilitate include job rotation, coaching, delegation of duties and job shadowing.

Development through Training

  • There is an extensive range of standard and customised courses available to staff contained in the Roads Service Training Directory.
  • Training courses may lead to the achievement of recognised qualifications.
  • Our 'Assistance to Study' scheme will support staff wishing to take external training and further education courses which are linked to their duties.
  • Roads Service, via Assistance to Study, will also support staff wishing to take courses for their own self-development. These developmental opportunities can include HNC and Degree courses in specified areas.

Development through Participation

  • Staff are actively encouraged to make a voluntary and positive contribution to the community through the community volunteering scheme.
  • Roads Service will provide assistance to support these activities.
