Professional & Technology Officer

General

A Professional and Technology Officer (PTO) in Roads Service will have responsibility for some aspects of the design, construction, management and maintenance of the road network in Northern Ireland and the implementation of transportation measures. PTO recruitment normally commences April/May each year.

There are 3 disciplines within the PTO Grade - Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design of roads related projects and the preparation and updating of civil engineering drawings and documents.
  • Design of street lighting installations and cabling systems.
  • Supervision of operations within the Vehicle Fleet Workshops.
  • Supervision of staff.
  • Use of computer applications and database amendments.
  • Dealing with public representatives and members of the public.

Entry Requirements - you must have:

  • BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in the relevant discipline - or qualifications considered by Roads Service to be an equivalent or higher level; and
  • At least 1 year post qualification experience gained within the last 5 years.

Education & Training

  • Self development opportunities exist through the Roads Service Assistance to Study scheme, which is designed to support staff wishing to take external training or further education courses.
  • Support under Assistance to Study may include financial assistance, time off for exams and pre-exam study, etc.
  • The main method of training is on-the-job.
  • There is a wide range of standard and customised training courses available for staff.
  • Additional training may be delivered via seminars, conferences, videos etc.
